IDPs Evicted from “Samshoblo” (homeland) Aren’t Giving in Their Request.

July 27, 2010
Nino Gelashvili

The IDPs evicted from the former publishing house “Samshoblo” (homeland) are planning to continue the protest rallies. They are requesting the provision with the residence places. There are approximately 300 families of IDPs in the building. According to Conservative Party member, Lasha Chkhartishvili, only several families of IDPs took the offering of the Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation – accommodation in Potskho and Oreli. The rest are temporarily residing in the places of their relatives.

IDPs state that it’s been twenty years they’ve been living and working in Tbilisi and have certain source of income. If they move to villages, they won’t be able to harvest for the season that means that they’ll stay with no daily bread for the whole year.

According to the official statement of the Ministry of IDPs, Refugees and Accommodation, some people in the former building of Samshoblo have been given the financial compensation a long time now. When receiving money, the imposed obligation envisaged the liberation of the occupied residence places. Some people own the residence places and apartments in different compact settlements which have been legalized by the state as their ownership. As for the several families residing there needing the accommodation, the Ministry will take care of them providing the residence places in different compact settlements that will be legalized and transferred to their ownership.

The IDPs don’t confirm the information provided by the Ministry. As an IDP from Abkhazia, Madona Gognadze stated to Interpressnews, she’s not even offered the alternative residence in the Zugdidi villages and lives in the streets with eight-month-old baby.

The eviction of IDPs from the former building of publishing house Samshoblo (homeland) started at 06:00 on July 26th with force. The IDPs were given five day notice to leave the building.

While eviction, the argument evoked between officials of the Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation and IDPs. The appearance of the Ministry officials caused the dissatisfaction of the IDPs that grew in the verbal argument. During the incident, the member of “November 7th” Jaba Jishkariani was detained. According to his lawyer, Gela Nikolaishvili, Jishkariani witnessed an incident at the building of publishing house Samshoblo – the IDP was being being beaten by the policemen. Jishkariani supported the IDP and the policemen attacked him.

According to his information, Jishkariani was severely beaten at 24:00 at the former Perovskaya St. Approximately 100 policemen took after him at the former building of the publishing house Samshoblo and attacked him in the store, broke down the glass and broke in the store.

Jishkariani had been locked up in the #2 cell of temporary isolation. According to Nikolaishvili, the detainee had hand injuries and his clothes were ripped off.
Jaba Jishkariani was liberated on July 27th on the account of Tbilisi City Court proceeding. The Judge fined him with the administrative fine of 400 lari.
