Akhmeta Population without harvest because of inept government

August 4, 2010
The Georgian labour Party is full of recriminations in their protests against the absence of water in Alazani irrigation canal. According to the statement of the Akhmeta coordinator of the Labour Party, Temur Bodaveli,  there has not been any water in Alazani irrigation canal all summer, which has  left approximately 20 villages of Akhmeta without any crop to harvest this year.

“Back in 2008, when the parliamentary elections were being held, the National Party majority deputy candidate Petre Ciskarishvili, accompanied television channel representatives to the buildings of the irrigation system and started showing off all that conducted rehabilitation work. He assured that the population would be provided with water for irrigation. Tsiskarishvili did the same during the local elections. And they are saying that the summer has passed, there’s no water and the natural disaster caused the river to dry up. There’s been a lot of money transferred to Akhmeta from the central budget. However, it is still uncertain where this money is invested or where it actually went. One thing is clear, however, there is little if any local products in Akhmeta’s community markets, everything is brought in and is too expensive. Basially because of poor management or worst, “the Government has left the region population with no harvest,” – stated Temur Bodaveli.
