49 cases filed against Russia concerning the personal interests of 340 citizens have been referred to the European Court of Human Rights by Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association. According to lawyers, the fundamental rights of their clients have been violated by Russian occupants.
“People were massively arrested and enslaved. While in slavery, they were forced to do grueling work; many lost their family members and their lives were put in jeopardy; some people suffered the torture, inhuman and degrading treatment. Their properties were massively destroyed. The houses of most people living in the gorge of Didi and Patara Liakhvi were burned down,” states the Young Lawyers Association.
According to them, proceedings in the Strasbourg Court take a considerate amount of time. The Young Lawyers Association is requesting the expedited examination of every case. Additionally, the Young Lawyers Association requested the formation of fact finding commission that will investigate specific details relevant to the cases.
In the case of a favorable decision for the applicants, compensation will be rewarded for moral and material damages that IDPs suffered after August conflict.
