The decision of Tbilisi City Court concerning the case of Irakli Kakabadze was appealed to the Appellate Court

August 19, 2010
The decision of Tbilisi City Court concerning the case of publicist Irakli Kakabadze was appealed to Appellate Court.
As Irakli Kakabadze’s lawyer Gela Nikolaishvili stated at the press conference conducted by non-governmental organization “Former Political Prisoners for Human Rights,” both for him and his client, the City Court decision of August 15th is completely incomprehensible and unacceptable.
According to this decision, Irakli Kakabadze, Shota Digmelashvili and Aleko Chigvinadze were all fined by 400-400 lari. The court ruled that they violated article 173 of the Code of Administrative Offences of Georgia that regards the disobedience of legal orders or instructions of law enforcement.
Irakli Kakabadze considers his and his friends’ arrest groundless. He blames legal officers for fight against the free speech and violence against the peaceful protest rally participants.
According to him, after the arrest at George Bush St, in the yard of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, he and his friends were physically assaulted by Tbilisi Patrol Police director Giorgi Gegechkori and his assistants.
Irakli Kakabadze and his lawyer Gela Nikolaishvili will wait for the decision of the Appellate Court starting from today. In case of undesirable results, the case will be addressed to the Strasbourg European Court of Human Rights.
