Vakhtang Komakhidze to present a film about August War in Geneva

August 20, 2010
On October 14th, the next round of discussions on the security issue of Georgia will take place in Geneva. Exactly for this period, the journalist Vakhtang Komakhidze plans to present his movie that will reflect upon the real reasons of the August war. As the head of the “Former Prisoners for Human Rights” Nana Kakabadze stated to the newspaper “Resonance,” Komakhidze is already working on the film and it will be completed by the end of September.

The journalist Vakhtan Komakhidze addressed the Switzerland government with the request of political shelter in January. Recently, he received their consent. Several famous journalistic investigations are linked to Komakhidze’s name. His last documentary reflects the meetings taken place in Tskhinvali region and touches August of 2008. Not too long ago, Nana Kakabadze visited Geneva and brought the special devices and material for the preparation of movie.

“The government of Switzerland directly granted Vakho Komakhidze the political shelter, in other words, acknowledged that he is a political prisoner and the Georgian government persecutes him. It should be noted that this statues was rendered in unusually short time – 5 months. Switzerland gives shelter very seldom; 3-4 people a year can be provided with such an award. Even these people have to wait approximately for two years. For this moment, they are trying to find a house for Vakho where he can move with his family. Unlike refugee camp, it has good conditions, the main thing is, he’ll be able to work on the movie, the movie, for which the persecution from government intensified against him,” – states Nana Kakabadze while talking to “Resonance” correspondent.

“When I came, I brought certain type of techniques with me. The non-governmental organizations, journalists and local Georgians sponsor the film. The main thing is that he can work in a peaceful environment. Currently, the film is being under montage and supposedly, ready for September. For now, Komakhidze is the operator, director and the voice-reader. If he needs certain material, we help him and we’ll do it till the movie is completed. The only thing needed is the interview that should be recorded in Tbilisi, we’ll help him in this and present the material later.”

According to him, the movie will be shown either at the end of September or the beginning of October in Geneva: “With the UN representatives, we’ll invite human rights advocators from different countries, including – Russia. Then, the human rights situation in Georgia will be discussed. One more thing – Vakho really wants to invite Ossetians to the movie presentation. So, it’s not excluded that the movie presentation coincides with the next round of Geneva consultations. Nothing and nobody will hinder him in this, besides; the movie will be shown in Tbilisi. In sum, it will be interesting for both west and Georgian population.
