Eka Beselia’s brother and wanted son are among the pardoned prisoners

August 30, 2010
Among the pardoned prisoners for the St. Mariam holiday are Eka Beselia’s brother, Sergo Beselia and her wanted son Rati Milorava. This was reported by Sergo Beselia’s lawyer, Lili Gelashvili. According to him, the pardon of Beselia and Milorava was initiated by the Prosecutor’s Office.

“It’s true that Milorava was wanted, but the pardon is the imperative will of President and in this case it touched Rati Milorava as well. The initiative was taken by the Prosecutor’s Office. The search and sentence of Milorava - 1.6 years - were abolished. Also, Sergo Beselia’s sentence was completely abolished too. As for the legal procedure regarding the pardon of wanted, for government, the key factor for both arresting and pardon is not the legal norms but the political will. So the government decides who to arrest and who to liberate,” – noted Gelashvili.

According to lawyer’s information, the liberation of Beselia and Milorava was requested by the international organizations from Georgian government.

“We knew about the request, but didn’t think that government would fulfill it. Yesterday, all of a sudden, we found out that Beselia and Milorava are in the list of pardoned prisoners,” – stated Gelashvili.

According to him, Eka Beselia herself went to Geguti where her brother was serving his sentence. According to Gelashvili, Eka Beselia will make a statement about the pardon of her brother and son, supposedly, tomorrow.

For St. Mariam holiday, president amnestied 249 prisoners, 211 were liberated, 27 sentences were half diminished. Two sentences were decreased.
