Russia States UN Resolution Is Counter-Productive

September 9, 2010
The foreign ministry of the Russian Federation assessed the resolution of the UN 64th Assembly as counter-productive and states that the government of Georgia and their western partners will have to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia earlier or later.

“A bit more than one-fourth of UN member states supported the initiative of Georgia; it cast doubt over the thesis of the Georgian side as if their initiative had universal support,” statement of the foreign ministry of Russia.

According to the foreign ministry of Russia, the enacted document has nothing to do with the aims of the humanitarian aid of the internally displaced people and does not support the resolution of the problems.

“It is evident that while working on the resolution the project authors did not envisage that independent states of Abkhazia and South Ossetia have existed in the region for two years already. The government of Georgia and their protectors on the international level will have to put up with this situation,” statement of the ministry.

Russian side voted against the tendentious resolution because the real situation is ignored in the title too and Abkhazia and South Ossetia are territories of Georgia there where internally displaced people have right to return. The government of Georgia tries to exaggerate the humanitarian situation and does not care about thousands of Georgian, Abkhaz and Ossetian people.

“When the Georgian side refuses to implement the Medvedev-Sarkozy agreement, which imposes the obligation of non-use of force on it, the statements of the Georgian side at the Geneva negotiations sound demagogical to find effective forms for the restoration of the peace and trust,” said foreign ministry of Russia.

Russian side thinks the resolution enacted on the 64th assembly might cause some difficulties at the Geneva negotiations which are the only format where Georgian, Abkhaz and Ossetian people are able to directly dialogue, cooperate on humanitarian issues and agree positions.

“The attempt of Tbilisi to involve the UN General Assembly in the process does not support the practical activities and concrete decisions in trust-building with Abkhaz and Ossetian sides and in cooperation on IDP problems,” officials state in Moscow.

UN General Assembly enacted resolution on September 7 which recognized the rights of every IDP and their descendants to return to Abkhazia and South Ossetia in the territory of Georgia regardless their ethnicity.

The resolution is concerned about the forcible change of the demographic situation in Georgia as a result of armed conflicts.
