Georgian Women’s Organizations Asking Government to Defend the Iranian Citizen Sakineh Ashtiani

September 10, 2010
Georgian women’s organizations are asking Georgian government to intervene in the sparing Sakineh Ashtiani’s life. Women’s organizations consider that the government should express its position against the death penalty in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

43-year-old Sakineh Ashtiani, a mother of two children, was first tried with the conviction of adultery in 2006 and sentenced to 99 birches. Despite the verdict implementation, in 2007, the case was renewed and she was sentenced to death by stoning.

Despite the pressure from international organizations, Sakineh Ashtiani’s death penalty was adjourned for 20 days on July 21st.

Sakineh Ashtiani’s son doubts that his mother will be executed at the end of Ramadan Holiday. This holiday is coming to its end today.

As the head of Human Rights Committee Gia Arsenishvili stated, of course, Georgian government won’t be able to intervene neither in Iranian, nor in any other countries’ internal affairs, but, according to the principles of humanity and the universal declaration of human rights, it’s desirable to change the death penalty of Sakineh Ashtiani with another penalty.
