Prosecutor’s Office Started Investigation on the Physical Assault of the Mother of Five Children

September 16, 2010
Gurjaani district prosecutor’s office started investigation of the physical assault of Tamar Ghelaghutashvili – mother of five children – by the Kvareli district policemen. The criminal case was launched under the Article of 333 Part I of the Criminal Code of Georgia.

The representative of the Human Rights Center appealed to the Kakheti regional prosecutor’s office regarding the incident and requested criminal liability of the policemen.

The Human Rights Center reports that the Kvareli district policemen insulted and physically assaulted Tamar Ghelaghutashvili, the mother of five children. She said the policemen demanded her to plead guilty in thievery; they threatened her with raping unless she obeyed their demand.

“Policeman Vano Tsitsriashvili and two more policemen blamed me in stealing the ring of my neighbor and took me to the police station. They cursed and beat me. They beat me with fists and legs. They threatened me with raping unless I plead guilty and return the ring to the neighbor. I was allowed to leave the police station only at 2:00 am,” wrote Tamar Ghelaghutashvili in her application to the Kakheti office of the Human Rights Center.

The officials of the Kvareli district police station do not comment on the incident.
