Do We Need “Georgian Strasbourg?”

September 16, 2010
MP from the opposition party Dimitri Lortkipanidze states that the Venice Commission will necessarily raise the question of appealing the final judgments of the courts in its recommendations.

Lortkipanidze stated about it on September 16 after his meeting with the members of the Venice Commission.

The MP said he had raised the question of appealing against the final judgments of the courts during the meeting with the commission members; the problem is not reflected in the new draft-constitution at all.

Lortkipanidze stated the Venice Commission members think the decision on appealing the similar judgments at the Constitutional Court would be a positive step.

“They promised to reflect their opinion in their recommendations,” said Lortkipanidze and once more spoke about the positive features of the initiative – “Georgian Strasbourg”.

He said the courts are full of illegal and ungrounded judgments.

Majority of the parliament of Georgia thinks the initiative will overbusy the Constitutional Court and finally it will support its discrediting. The State Constitutional Commission declined the initiative for the same motive.
