Ethnic Abkhaz Person Disappeared in Khurcha

October 18, 2010
The Human Rights Center (HRIDC) reports that on October 9, 2010 45-year-old ethnic Abkhaz Gari Kopua disappeared after crossing the administrative border in the village of Khurcha supposedly by Georgian law enforcement officers; he crossed the border by his car. The witnesses allege that he crossed border in order to deliver the luggage of the local residents. However, Georgian border officers detained him.

The local population claims that Kopua currently is in the building of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti regional police department; however the police officers deny the information. The local population alleges that the detainee was beaten and consequently nobody is allowed to see him. Several people say he was taken to Tbilisi.

The information about the detainee was sent to the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia.

The Human Rights Center appeals to the EU mission in Georgia and the Human Rights Commissioner for the CoE to investigate this fact.
