Journalists Were Not Allowed to Attend Elections at Gori University

October 25, 2010
Saba Tsitsikashvili, Gori

On October 21, chairman of the election commission of the academician council at the Gori University Malkhaz Mindiashvili requested the journalist of the Gori office of the Human Rights Center to leave the election precinct. The commission member Vano Balakhashvili stated that journalists should not attend the election process.

“I give you two minutes to leave the area,” said the commission chairman Malkhaz Mindiashvili. He is chairman of an NGO “Office of the UN Association”. Besides that, his brother is the head of the Gori Public Registration Agency. Representatives of the non-governmental organizations have met in his office several times and discussed transparency of information and establishment of civil society in Georgia. Nevertheless, Malkhaz Mindiashvili could not recall the law, resolution or a decree which state that journalist can stay only two seconds at the precinct.

Since August 6, 2010 Gori University has new administration. After former rector Zaza Tsotniashvili resigned, the director of the Gori public school # 5 and professor of the University Aleksandre Mghebrishvili occupied the position of the rector. But Mghebrishvili returned to the public school as soon as the school year started and since September 6 former chairman of the Gori district educational resource center Giorgi Sosiashvili became the interim rector of the University.

Member of the election commission Vano Balakhashvili stated that each faculty has one candidate in the elections. “I think it is competitive elections,” said Balakhashvili.

Gori office of the Human Rights Center petitioned to the Gori University administration and requested permission to attend the elections on October 20.  However, nobody knew that the elections were scheduled on October 21.

By the way, the election commission is the same which elected the rector on August 22, 2008. The Human Rights Center has already published an article about it. There is no statute, resolution or regalement of the election commission on the official website of the University.
