Media Union “Obiektivi” Calls Upon the Opposition Parties and Civil Society To Protest Tortladze’s “Freedom Charter”

November 2, 2010
Media Union “Obiektivi” calls upon the opposition parties and civil society to protest the Freedom Charter initiated by MP Gia Tortladze.

“Obiektivi” speaks about those threats which might originate from the draft document and states that it will support “reinforcement of police regime in the state.”

“Gia Tortladze, who is declared to be oppositionist, initiated the draft-law which opposes universally recognized human rights and supports threatening, split and opposing of the society. According to the draft-law, any person, who receives more than 25 000 GEL as a transfer from abroad, will have to report to the MIA. Besides that, according to the draft law, the government can declare any political opponent to be a terrorist or a spy. The increase of authority of law enforcement institutions, special units and police is so eye-catching that obviously the draft-law was supported by the president and the minister of internal affairs Vano Merabishvili,” statement of the Obiektivi.

As for the agents of the Security Council, the Obiektivi suggests the author of the idea “to start lustration from the first person of the country who served in the frontier army of the KGB.”

The Bar Association and Greens Movement also joined the protest of the Obiektivi.

Holding protest demonstrations in front of the parliament and Gia Tortladze’s house is not excluded either.

Freedom Charter unifies the Law on Lustration and the so called Patriot Act and foresees strict monitoring of land and air borders, strategic entities and cargo. The draft-law aims to control financial operations and bank transfers; a state commission shall be set up for the registration of the employees of special services of the former Soviet Union; to estimate restrictions on employment of former representatives of the central committee of the communist party and Lenin committees, etc.

The parliament discussed the draft-law at the first hearing last week.
