Family of Eight Members Remained Homeless in Khoni

November 5, 2010

Landslide fell in the Kinchkha village in Khoni district. The Karosanidzes – family of eight members – remained homeless. The landslide buried their two-storied-house. Fortunately, all eight members of the family managed to leave the house and were not seriously injured.

“It was dawn when we felt the house rocking. We thought it was earthquake. We took the children immediately out and ran out. As soon as we left the house we looked back and saw the  house was buried into the ground and only the roof was seen above the ground.”, Mary Karosanidze - the housewife of the family reported to the “Human Right Center”.

Besides the house, the landslide completely destroyed our cattle and fowl. The local government gave them with temporary accommodation in the same village. They were assisted with medicines, food and household items for primary assistance, because they could not manage to take anything out of the house.

“We will try to assist them. We will allocate sums from the local budget for them to buy a house”, Zurab Jibukhaia the Khoni district governor said.

The Kinchha village of Khoni district is the most mountainous. It is situated on the landslide zone. There are twelve families in the same dangerous situation for this time. But they still remain in their houses, because the local government has not provided them with alternative accommodations yet.

According to the villagers, the landslide was caused by active chopping of woods on the mountain. The woods have been chopped for many years.

The forest Department officials stated that each tree was legally cut down. According to them, the landslide was caused by heavy rains which softened the surface of the ground and the soil fell down.
