Ochkhomuri River Might Flood a Village

November 29, 2010
Four families live in dangerous situation in the landslide zone on the bank of the Ochkhomuri River in Garakha village in Chkhorotsku district. Not long ago, heavy rains washed away the plots and the landslide fell 8-10 meters away from houses.

According to the local population, the Ochkhomuri River has been threatening the Kazbegi Street for 20 years already. The locals petitioned to all levels of the authority. Although their petitions were satisfied, the problem still remained. Last year, based on the petition of the population and with the support of Chkhorotsku district administration, the local Road Construction Company started reinforcement of the river bank to change the river bed. They built several-meter-long dike but at the moment the construction activities have stopped.

“They stopped construction in a place where the river washes the bank stronger. It created dangerous zone for six families. And it threatens four families with overflow. We want to urge everyone again to pay attention to us until it is not too late; if they do our houses might survive”, the local resident Zaira Rukhaia said.

The construction launched with the support of Chkhorotsku Municipal Board, aimed to replace the landslide zone. The project does not have enough funds; so we could not finish even the first part of the scheduled activities; the activities were divided into two stages. They built only 141 meter-long dike instead initially planned 208 meters.

“As soon as we have funds, the construction will continue. We will do our best to avoid the families danger living in the landslide zone,” the Chkhorotsku district Governor Merab Shelia said
