Tskhinvali Regime against Georgian Language Circle at Akhalgori District Youth Palace

December 2, 2010
Tskhinvali de-facto regime did not allow the administration of the Akhalgori District Youth Palace to set up a circle of Georgian Language and Culture. The director of the Youth Palace Tamar Mearkishvili informed the Interpersnews about it.

“We usually encountered some problems when working on this issue; however, we hoped the Tskhinvali de-facto authority would not block the circle of Georgian language. This morning, I was called from the education department of the Tskhinvali authority and told they would not allow us to open the circle in the palace. Afterwards, I wrote resignation letter because the decision of the Tskhinvali authority insulted me as an ethnic Georgian and left the position in protest,” said Tamar Mearkishvili.

Mearkishvili said she requested the government of Georgia to pay the salaries of the teachers of the Georgian Language and Literature circle but she has not received the reply yet.

“The Tskhinvali de-facto authority refused us to pay the salaries for the Georgian teachers. If the Georgian government had paid the salaries, we could have continued our activities,” said Mearkishvili. About 60 pupils attend different circles at Akhalgori district youth palace.
