The Human Rights Center Blames Judge In Violation of Journalist’s Rights

December 2, 2010
The Human Rights Center blames the judge Labaza Duishvili at the Telavi district court in the violation of the journalist’s rights. According to the human rights organization, the Law of Georgia on General Courts does not prohibit the audio-recording of the court hearings but the Judge Duishvili restricted this right without motivation.

On November 28 the Judge Duishvili discussed administrative cases at the Telavi District Court and imposed administrative imprisonment on four people based on the request of the Kakheti regional governor.

Before the court hearing, journalist Gela Mtivlishvili requested permission to audio-record the court hearing in accordance to the law requirements but the judge did not satisfy his request.

“I will not allow you to audio-record the trial. I am not going to satisfy your petition. If it is necessary, I will give you the official document on refusal,” said the Judge Labaza Duishvili.

The Human Rights Center intends to appeal to the Council of Justice of Georgia against the judge.
