Telavi Cable TV Switched Off Channel II

December 8, 2010
The Telavi based cable television “Gorda” initially stopped transmission of the programs of Maestro and Kavkasia; but on November 25-26, after the opposition parties started protest rallies in front of the parliament in Tbilisi, they switched off the Channel II too. It initially happened on November 18 when the initiative group of the Public Assembly met their supporters in Telavi.

The Channel II of the public broadcasting covers press-conferences, meetings and rallies of the opposition parties too. The cable TV-Stations transmit the programs of the Channel II in the regions.

The Telavi Cable TV has about 5 000 subscribers in the district.

According to the agreement, installation of the cable TV costs 50 GEL for each family and they have to pay 10 GEL per month. According to the agreement, the Cable TV should provide the subscribers with 30 TV-channels. After the programs of the Maestro and Kavkasia were suspended, Gorda added two more entertainment channels and in total they transmit more than 30 TV-Channels.

Head of the Telavi office of the Georgian Young Lawyers Association Marekh Mgaloblishvili said the agreement does not prohibit the administration of Gorda to suspend broadcasting of any channel; so they are free to switch off any channel which they dislike.

The head of the TV-station “Gorda” Givi Mamukelashvili said: “The television belongs to me and I can choose the channels according to my own decision,” however, he clarified that the transmission of the Maestro and Kavkasia stopped because of technical reasons.

The Telavi cable TV-station stopped transmission of the Maestro and Kavkasia programs on September 29. The administration explained the delay by technical problems and despite many promises, they have not renewed the transmission yet. The administration refuses to transmit the programs of the Telavi based independent TV-station Tanamgzavri.

Short time ago, the Gorda started to release its own news program which is aired twice a week. The news program mostly covers the governmental activities.
