Human Rights Center Published the Newspaper “Self-Governance”

December 27, 2010
In the frameworks of the project Civil Councils implemented by the support of Open Society Georgia Foundation, Human Rights Center published the newspaper Tvitmmartveloba (Self-Governance). 10 000 newspaper copies were printed and distributed for free in Akhmeta and Kvareli Region villages.

According to the project coordinator Lia Khuroshvili, the citizens practically take no part in the local government activity in the region though the Civil Councils work on the important issues for the municipality residents. “The newspaper provides information in the understandable language, how to be involved in the activity of local government bodies, what is the significance of involvement in the city council, what rights and obligations the citizens have. The newspaper provides advice how to obtain public information, etc…”- states Lia Khuroshvili.

The project started in the October of 2010 and continued for 6 months. In the frameworks of the project the problems of Akhmeta and Kvareli region villages were identifies, approximately 80 young people went through the training and the Civil Councils were established as a result which will actively work for solving the problems of the villages.
