Georgian Sailors Physically Assaulted by Pirates

January 17, 2011
Fifteen Georgian sailors have been under the slavery of Somali pirate for more than four months now. Pirates are demanding million dollars for their release.

Somali pirates are physically assaulting Georgian sailors – reports Sergo Devadze, one of the fathers of the captured sailor: “The situation is very critical. The guys told me that they have been without food for five days now. They are telling that the pirates beat them severely at night.”

On January 10th, the family members of 15 sailors held a protest rally in front of Adjara government residence. The captives had contacted their families in the morning asking for help. The head of Adjara Autonomous Republic Levan Varshalomidze met with the people gathered in front of government building and promised to give information later.

As we know, there is money being collected for sailors. It is unknown how much exactly has been collected.
