German Congress of Journalist Union Evaluates Hoax Report of Imedi TV

January 17, 2011
German Congress of Journalist Union adopted special resolution concerning the Ethics Council of Georgian journalist charter. The resolution mentions Imedi hoax report as a “disturbing case.”

“In many countries the opportunity and readiness for preparation and broadcasting of free and critical information wane. The reason can be the repressions by government, economic independence and the lack of media professionalism. The similar case has been observed in Georgia. The hoax report broadcast on IMEDI TV live covering 2010 hoax invasion of Russian army was a disturbing case,” – reads the resolution sent to Ethics Council of Georgian Journalist Charter by the head of German Journalist Union  Michael Konken.

The Charter Council considered Natia Koberidze, a host of hoax report and a signatory of Charter, to be in violation of article 1 of the Ethics Charter of Journalists. Koberidze left the charter after this decision.

“From November 9 to 10, approximately 300 delegates gathered at the German Congress of Journalist Union. We are glad to let you know that the delegates adopted resolution concerning the Council of Journalist Ethics Charter. German Journalist Union welcomes the initiative of Georgian colleges that created independent ethics council to establish professional ethics standard in their country. German Journalist Union will promote and support this initiative in every way,” – states the letter of Michael Konken.

German Journalist Union was created in 1949 and it unites about 30 000 journalists.
