Director of Public Broadcasting Lies

January 18, 2011
On January 4, 2010, participants of the demonstration in support of veterans, whose rally was previously dispersed in Hero Square, expressed their concern about the activities of Public Broadcasting. They claimed that PB did not highlight the demonstration of the veterans in Tbilisi.

The Interpresnews published a statement from Public Broadcasting which said that “Gia Chanturia cannot accept criticism in regard to highlighting the veterans’ demonstration.”

The News Agency also reported that “journalists asked why the Public Broadcasting failed to highlight the ongoing hunger-strike of veterans, their dispersal and subsequent process properly. Chanturia checked the information with his colleagues and then replied that “Live Synchrony” was aired in the 4:00 pm news program on the day before. He added that the demonstration was actually aired and he could not accept complaints.”

Netgazeti.ge checked the 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm news programs from January 3, but no information was released about the dispersal of the veterans’ rally. On January 4, Public Broadcasting aired only one telecast about the veterans’ hunger strike in the 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm news programs.

The online newspaper, civil.ge, also reported that Rustavi 2, Imedi TV and Public Broadcasting have turned a blind eye on the breakup of the hunger strike by police in the Tbilisi center on January 3.

Nevertheless, film crews from Public Broadcasting, Rustavi 2 and Imedi TV worked on the veteran’s hunger strike.
