The Members of the “Public Movement of IDPs” Allege to See Police Officer Beating IDP

January 24, 2011

A police officer who controlled the eviction process in the Chkheidze street #8, Tbilisi, beat 65 years old IDP from Kodori Valley Iuri Svanidze. The members of the “Public Movement of IDPs” reported to the “Interpresnews” about this. They monitored the process since morning.

According to them, they were at the scene of incident at that moment in Chkhedze Street #8. Svanidze tried to enter the building; he introduced his documents to police officer to prove that he really lived in that building, but police officers did not allow him to go in and it resulted into an incident.

The eviction from the above-mentioned building started in the morning of January 24 and 80 families were evicted.

The Ministry of IDPs from the occupied territories, accommodation and refugees denies the spread information about beating of an IDP.

According to the statement of the Ministry, the spread information about physical assault of an IDP by police officer during the eviction from the building in Chkheidze Street #8 is not true.

“It is disinformation. The resettlement process of IDPs is going in a peaceful environment and no incidents have occurred. The members of the” Public Movement of IDPs” spread false information on purpose and they artificially complicate the situation.
