According to Iva Kuzanov, the Reason of Patient’s Leg Amputation was not the Surgery Conducted by him

January 26, 2011

The plastic surgeon Iva Kuzanov will be ceased state license for a month. His lawyer Dimitri Gabunia considers the news disseminated by TV the abasement of his work reputation and states that the information according to which the reason of patient’s leg amputation was the surgery conducted by Kuzanov is not true.

As Kuzanov stated at the conference held today, Commission imposed only one charge on him and he shares it, but categorically denies that the reason of leg amputation was the surgery conducted by him.

“After the first surgery conducted in the oncology institution, the examination of patient was made. According to this examination, the malignant tumor was not observed. Thus, I concluded that this research was sufficient for conducting a surgery. I did so and the recidivate tumor which was observed on the nerve was entirely cut out. The oncology institution refused to conduct this surgery and named the damage of nerve to be the reason that would cause the child to lose his leg,” – stated Kuzanov.

According to Kuzanov, this was their competence. As the plastic surgeon noted, after completing the surgery the material was sent to morphologic research which issued response on the intermediate state of the tumor.

“Parents knew everything and were warned that it could have been resulted in the amputation. In a year after the surgery the nerve was restored and the child could move. In a year afterwards, relapse developed again that gave rise to amputation,” – noted Kuzanov.

Plastic surgeon talked about his mistake. “I made a mistake when trusted research made by oncology institution. I should have conducted morphology biopsy directly before the surgery. Since I made such a mistake, I should agree with the fairness of ceasing the license,” – stated Kuzanov and added that still cannot understand why he should have conducted such a research.
