Eka Beselia Requests Investigation of the Death of a Female Prisoner

February 2, 2011
Head of public movement “Solidarity with Illegal Prisoners” Eka Beselia requested to investigate the case of a female prisoner Bela Gonashvili who died in jail on January 27.

The organization informed the News Agency Interpresnews that the family requested freedom and corresponding medical treatment for Bela Gonashvili, who had cancer, for a long time; however, the sick woman was neither released nor taken to a special hospital.

“Inattentive, indifferent and inhuman activities of the corresponding institutions resulted into the death of the convicted woman. We request investigation of the fact and punishment of the responsible persons in accordance to the law,” said the representatives of the organization and added that they would inform international organizations about the fact.

Parent of another prisoner informed the humanrights.ge that prison administration petitioned the court to release Bela Gonashvili. However, the court did not satisfy their request supposedly because of the directives from the prosecutor’s office.
