James B. Steinberg for Georgian Civil Society

The meeting between the representatives of civil society with Deputy Secretary of State James B. Steinberg ended at the U.S. Embassy.

Chairwoman of the Georgian Young Lawyers Association Tamar Chugoshvili told the journalists that Steinberg expressed readiness to assist Georgian civil society.

“I am thankful to the US Government for their commitment to Georgian civil society. They said they assist the Georgian civil society and promote the activities of non-governmental organizations,” said Tamar Chugoshvili.

Chugoshvili added that they discussed the independence of judiciary system, ongoing processes in Georgian media and Georgian election law during the meeting. Public Defender of Georgia Giorgi Tugushi said he raised every question which needs urgent response.
 
“I discussed those issues which are generally highlighted in the reports of public defender. We spoke about the activities of the ombudsman’s institution in Georgia,” said Tugushi.

He added that the US State Department pays particular attention to the activities of the civil society and their cooperation with the government.

The representative of the Multinational Georgia Arnold Stepanian, chairwoman of the Georgian Young Lawyers Association Tamar Chugoshvili, representative of the Institute for Youth Affairs Nino Danelia, Gocha Aleksandria from the United Trade Unions and Public Defender of Georgia Giorgi Tugushi attended the meeting.

US Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Philip H. Gordon and U.S. ambassador John Bas attended the meeting.
