Despite Spent 4 Million GEL Telavi Still Suffers from Lack of Drinking Water

March 14, 2011

According to the Kakheti News Center 4 million GEL was spent on the improvement of the drinking water supply in Telavi district for the last 3 years. Nevertheless, the local population still suffers from the lack of drinking water which is supplied only for two hours twice a week and specialists allege it is polluted (http://ick.ge/ka/rubrics/main-news/61-tnews/5051-2011-03-09-14-02-58.html).

Telavi residents told the Kakheti News Center the situation has worsened for the last 4 weeks. Before that, drinking water was supplied to the population three times per week.

Kakheti regional office manager of the United Water Supply Company of Georgia Parna Makashvili told the Kakheti News Center that reduction of the water supply resulted from the deficiency of water in reservoirs.

“We receive the water naturally; we do not have pumps. The water-level reduced and now we have to supply the local population with drinking water only two days per week. In about 10 days the water-level will raise due to the increased humidity,” said Makashvili.

He added that in 2011, 6 590 000 GEL will be spent on the rehabilitation of drinking water system in Telavi.

Kakheti regional governor Giorgi Ghviniashvili does not comment on the fact. His deputy Giorgi Sibashvili clarified that deficiency in the drinking water was caused by climate conditions. “There are geological conclusions which prove that reduction of drinking water was caused by natural climate conditions,” said Sibashvili.
