Victim of Domestic Violence Urges for Help

March 30, 2011

36-year-old woman from a village in Kakheti region, who has two underage children, requests protection from domestic violence and placement in the shelter. The woman said her husband threatens her with murder in presence of their children.

“My husband and mother-in-law have been beating me for several years since our marriage but I endured it. Short time ago, my mother-in-law broke into my bed-room with branches and petrol and threatened to burn me down. I jumped out of the window and escaped together with my children through it. My husband often chases me with axe in his hand and threatens to kill me. I do not know where he got a truncheon from and beats me with it. They do not give me money to buy food. So, I grew up my children with dry bread. I often sleep at my relative’s house. My husband last attacked me several days ago. He threatened me to eviscerate me in our children’s presence. I managed to call patrol police but when they left he continued beating me. I had my nose broken. I have nowhere to go. Please, help me and take me to the shelter,” wrote the victim of the domestic violence in her application to the Kakheti office of the Human Rights Center.

The lawyer of the human rights organization Lia Khuroshvili said the organization has already started to study the case based on the application. “According to the explanation letter, the husband and the mother-in-law have committed crime. We will file appeals against those people to the Prosecutor’s Office in near future and request to start investigation on the fact. In addition, our representatives monitor the family in order to protect the woman and her children from any kind danger before they are placed in the shelter,” said the representatives of the Human Rights Center.
