Public Defender – No Facilities for Physically Disabled People in the Towns of Georgia

Public Defender of Georgia Giorgi Tugushi requested adapted environment for the people with restricted physical abilities. The Ombudsman said, the problem of available environment for those people is particularly urgent in the regions of Georgia.

“In order to analyze the situation, our center for people with physical disabilities requested information from regional offices (Kutaisi, Zugdidi, Batumi, Poti, Gori, Telavi, Akhalkalaki, and Rustavi). According to the provided information, no corresponding environments are created for the people with physical disabilities in the towns of Georgia. The buildings, public transport, foot-paths and passages on the streets are not adapted for disabled people. In Telavi, sound traffic lights are not installed for the people with various disabilities; pavements in Telavi are not adapted for people with wheelchairs,” reports the Public Defender.

According to him, information analyze demonstrated that authorities of most towns in Georgia do not work on the improvement of the environment for the disabled people.

The Public Defender recommended the local self-governmental institutions to create all necessary facilities to make the environment available for the people with physical disabilities.
