Pastures Returned to Population of Village Zeghduleti

April 18, 2011

As the resident of the village Zeghduleti, the coordinator of the regional organization of Free Democrats Elguja Mandzulashvili stated to interpressnews, the village population met with the Governor of Shida Kartli Region Zurab Arsoshvili. As a result of the meeting it was decided that the land owner would receive alternative land. As for the pastures, they would stay in the ownership of the village residents.

“15 village residents met with the Governor today. It was decided at the meeting that the owner would receive 30 hectare land and give back our pastures as a result,” – stated Elguja Mandzulashvili.

The population of the village Zeghduleti was protesting against alienation of the pastures on April 15th and requested the help for returning the land. The physical conflict took place between the locals and the officials of the Shida Kartli regional police. The incident started after the locals did not let the owner of the alienated pastures work on the land. The police stopped the peasants and imposed them with 400 GEL fine.

According to the population, the pastures had been alienated secretly from them. According to them, except for the pastures covering for about 75 hectare territory, approximately 100 hectare reserve land has been alienated. The peasants found out about this as they were hindered to drive the cattle out to the pasture.

The leaders of Free Democrats and Georgian Party visited the place. Zeghduleti village borders with the occupied territories. Approximately 400 families of peasants live there.
