Civil Society Addresses International Organizations

April 19, 2011

Georgian NGOs address the international society to convince government of Georgia in the necessity of reaching agreement with the opposition on electoral reform.

The Conference entitled Civil Society for Democratic Elections was held at the Sheraton Metekhi Palace organized by the Georgian Academy.
The diplomatic corpus accredited in Georgia and the representatives of international organizations attended the event.

The representative of Georgian Academy Temur Naneishvili introduced the appeal.

The NGOs refer to the fatal results of the totalitarian governance taking into account violations of human rights and freedom of speech, elite corruption and other factors. Realizing the dangerous perspectives in case of changing government by revolution, they agree on the necessity of changing government by means of elections which is possible only after the consensus between the government and opposition is reached.

According to the appeal, the sides have to agree on creation of objective mechanism of registering voters, de-politicization of police, freedom of judiciary and media, exclusion of illegally using administrative resources.

The representatives of Georgian NGOs consider that the desire of government to protract the time till the moment when it is impossible to make essential changes even in case of agreement is an attempt of usurpation of power and simulation of public conflict.

Georgian NGOs call on international organizations to publicly and clearly express their position on problems of Georgia’s democracy, human rights protection, freedom of speech, elite corruption and electoral environment as it was made in the report of the U.S. Department of State and by the U.S. Ambassador John Bass.
