Notwithstanding President’s Decision, Public Agency Employees Worked as Usua

April 26, 2011
Notwithstanding the President’s decision to declare April 21st the big Thursday as a holiday, local government bodies and the agencies of the Ministry of Justice continued to work as usual.

“I wanted to go to the church, but the Governer said that we had to work,” – stated the employee of Akhmeta local government to the Kakheti Information Center.

“Why am I making the employess work on the holiday? What kind of question is that. I work all the time. Why do not you ask me whether I ate breakfast in the morning,” – stated the Governor of Akhmeta municipality Koba Maisuradze.

“Why are you asking me? Why don’t you read the Labor Code. I need to finish my work and that is why,” – stated the Governor of Sighnaghi Municipality Nodar Ochlamazashvili.

According to paragraph 3 of the article 20 of the Labor Code, apart from the holidays established by law, the employee is authorized to request day-off on other days that must be determined by the labor agreement. Fulfilling work obligations on the holiday is considered to be overtime work and its conditions must be determined by the agreement.
