May 5, 2011

EU will watch the state of penitentiary system and the human rights situation in Georgia more closely, - states the letter of External Action Service of EU received as a response to the letter of the head of Media Union Obiektivi (Objective) and the media ombudsman of People’s United Resistance Movement Irma Inashvili sent on March 28th.

The head of Human Rights and Democracy Departments of EU External Action Service Riina Kionka thanked Irma Inashvili on behalf of the high representative of EU Common Foreign and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, thanked for paying attention to the state of Georgian penitentiary and the measures taken to call attention to this problem, including the protest rallies with the request of large-scale amnesty.

According to Riina Kionka, the critical remarks that Georgian government does not take sufficient measures for the human rights protection will be observed. Besides, the EU will continue to monitor Georgian government in the frameworks of European Neighborhood policy, regarding the measures promoting democratic governance and respect for human rights, namely, the state of prisoners and organization of assemblies and manifestations.

According to Riina Kionka, these topics will be discussed in the frameworks of dialogue between EU and Georgia the three rounds of which have already taken place. She states that the critical remarks that Georgian government does not take sufficient measures for protecting human rights will be observed and the theme of democracy and human rights protection remains to be a priority in EU-Georgia relations,” – states Riina Kionka.
