Riot Police Not Allowed “Utsnobi” To Enter “Radio-Utsnobi”

May 23, 2011

In conjunction with the protest demonstrations that took place on May 21 by Georgian  opposition political parties, the brother of the leader of the Georgian Party Levan Gachechiladze, with nickname Utsnobi, together with other opposition activists Bidzina Gegidze and Kakha Mikaia, intended to enter Radio Utsnobi. The radio station is located in one of the buildings within the public broadcasting company. (Utsnobi, Gia Gachechiladze is the founder and shareholder of the radio station).

A large group of journalists were following Utsnobi. They wanted to acquire information regarding Gachechiladze’s new program. As a result, Utsnobi arrived at the entrance of  radio “Utsnobi” together with many journalists and cameramen.

When they approached the entrance, riot police officers who were deployed at the entrance of the GBP started a commotion. They donned shields, blocked the road to Utsnobi and refused to allow him into the building.

Utsnobi and Bidzina Gegidze blamed the journalists in the incident. They stated that if the journalists had not arrived at the GPB so loudly, the riot police would not have blocked their way.

“I am going to my radio station, and please let me in!” Utsnobi told the riot police officers. One of them promised to reply to his request after he had clarified whether he could allow Utsnobi into the radio station or not.

Several minutes later, the same police officer told Utsnobi that he could not allow him into the radio station.

As a result, Utsnobi and his friends left the area. The riot police officers saw them off by knocking on the shields and Utsnobi protested this fact. However, the riot police officers eradicated the incident between them and Utsnobi – supposedly, one of their commanders suggested the officers stop shouting and knocking on their shields.

Finally, Utsnobi left the surrounding area of the radio station “Utsnobi”.
