Peaceful Night in the Kostava Avenue

May 23, 2011

At night of May 22, a leader of the Public Assembly Nona Gaprindashvili warned the demonstrators blocking the Kostava Avenue in front of the Public Broadcasting Company, about upcoming threat.

Nona Gaprindashvili suggested the demonstrators to stand round the surrounded territory. She said she had some information about the expected attack from law enforcement officers and they should prepare for the attack.

After the statement, Nona Gaprindashvili told the Interpresnews that she did not have verified information though there was some signal about the supposed attack.

About 200 demonstrators were near the PB building at that time. They stood round the surrounded territory. All of them were holding a plastic pipe in the hand.

Despite the “signal”, last night was peaceful in the Kostava Avenue. No serious incidents occurred in the area. The leaders of the Public Assembly were together with demonstrators all night long; among them was Nino Burjanadze, (former chair of the Parliament of Georgia) who stayed with demonstrators till early morning.

Burjanadze thanked to the supporters with their strength and suggested to fortify the occupied territory. She said the part of the Kostava Avenue, which they have blocked, is fortified from the Hero Square but she suggested 70 supporters to fortify the area from the side of the Hotel “Holiday Inn”.

The demonstrators executed Burjanadze’s suggestion and fortified both sides of the blocked territory.
