Public Defender’s Office Published List of Detainees during Protest Rallies

The representatives of the Georgian Public Defender monitored the pretrial detention settings of the Ministry of Internal Affairs on May 26-28 and visited people arrested during the protest rallies in May of 2011.

The Public Defender’s Office informed the Interpresnews that the list published by the MIA itself names only the people detained on May 26. The list of the Ombudsman’s office lists everybody detained before May 26; and their number is 162.

The Prevention and Monitoring Department of the PDO monitored the pre-trial detention settings in Tbilisi, Imereti, Adjara, Guria, Shida Kartli, Kvemo Kartli, Mtskheta-Mtianeti and Kakheti regions. The representatives of the PDO interviewed the prison administrations, detainees and checked corresponding documents too.

The monitoring demonstrated that most detainees have more-or-less serious injuries. Several of them have grave injuries that were confirmed by the protocols drawn up when they were delivered at the pretrial detention setting. The detainees said in private conversations that they were injured during dispersal of the demonstration and after detention too. Though, many of them refused to make written explanations to the PDO.

The Public Defender of Georgia believes the forensic expertise shall be carried out on the detainees in the pretrial detention settings who have various injuries and requests corresponding investigation of each fact.
