Mikheil Saakashvili: “When one side wants violence, there is no possibility to wrap them up in diapers”

June 7, 2011

‘When one side wants violence, there is no possibility to wrap them up in diapers and peacefully get rid of them’, - President Saakashvili told Russian edition “Novoe Vremia.”

Journalist Evgenia Albats asked why did the government need to brutally handle the opposition.

“Brutally? I don’t think that it was brutal. Brutality was what took place after the fact, when people died. Police actions were adequate. We had to deal with people who wanted violence. When any side wants violence there is no possibility to put them in diapers and peaceful get rid of them. The same night I was watching how “Barselona” supporters were dispersed in Barselona and England – police’s actions there were a lot more brutal… In reality I’m very satisfied now with police actions than three years ago”, President said. According to the edition, Saakashvili meant 7 November of 2007.
