“Prisoners Unable to Wash, Shave Beard or Cut Finger Nails”

June 14, 2011

32 people detained after the May 26th protest rally disruption remain under custody in Kakheti detention cells. As Marekh Mgaloblishvili, the head of Telavi Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) stated to Kakheti Information Center the prisoners are unable to keep the private hygiene.

“There are 18 prisoners in Telavi detention cells, 5 – in Sighnaghi and 9 – in Kvareli. Most of them are sentenced to 30-day imprisonment. The prisoners are unable to wash themselves due to the absence of water and towel. They cannot shave beard or cut finger nails. They have no brush. The situation is hardest in Telavi temporary detention cell where two prisoners with diabetes are placed. One of them needs insulin and special food which is not available in the detention cell. We requested the endocrinologist to cheack these prisoners twice, but with no result. I am very concerned about the health of these prisoners,” – stated Marekh Mgaloblishvili.
