Action at Batumi Detention Cell

June 27, 2011

“Do not torture!” “Do not be silent!” “Do not hide!” “Investigate!” –with these slogans the NGOs celebrated the international day for supporting victims of torture in Batumi. They gathered at the temporary detention cell in Batumi. They consider that the facts of torture in this department are too frequent.

“With today’s action we want to support the victims of torture. The facts of torture are frequent in the prisons of Georgia. People are leaving prisons with illnesses, the death rate is high,” – noted the representative of Georgian Center for Psychological and Medical Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (GSRT) Nana Gogriladze.

According to the representative of Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA), serving administrative sentence equals to torture and inhuman treatment as the preliminary detention cells are not equipped properly.
