Akhalgori Governor – “They can appeal wherever they want”

June 27, 2011

The Governor of Akhalgori municipality Zurab Pitskhelauri categorically denies the information about blackmailing the journalist of Rezonansi (Resonance) Mari Otarashvili.

“I have no idea where they heard this. No blackmailing ever took place. I told them that they were covering things incorrectly. I showed her newspapers and asked why she was not covering the murder committed by Ossetians? She has received ID card in Akhalgori and has relatives there. If she writes something bad about them, she might face some problems. She can appeal wherever she wants. They were the ones who blackmailed me. They brought Shalva Ramishvili here and abused me. I never abused them. I do not want to know what they will do and where they will appeal. I will act adequately,” – stated Zurab Pitskhelauri with Mtskheta-Mtianeti Information Center.

On June 23rd, the newspaper Rezonansi disseminated the statement regarding the accusations of Akhalgori Governor against the journalist Mari Otarashvili. According to the board of editors, “The head of Akhalgori legitimate government continues exercising pressure on Mari Otarashvili not only by verbal assault, but the blackmailing as well. In the program “without accreditation” he stated that he owes discrediting material regarding that proves that journalist is a “spy.” The newspaper Rezonansi considers his statement to be an attempt of pressure against the concrete journalist and the newspaper in general. Thus, the board of editors discusses the possibilities of applying different legal mechanisms, including submitting complaint against the legitimate Governor of Akhalgori for the attempt of slander and tarnishing work authority.
