Three Year Old Child Died in Kvemo Mleta

June 30, 2011

People still live in the risky zone

On Sunday, June 26, Khatia Nazghaidze, 3, tragically died in Kvemo Mleta village in Dusheti district. She fell in the river and the locals found her dead at night. Khatia Nazghaidze’s family was on the list of families who were to be immediately resettled from the area.

In 2010, the landslide blocked the river-bed in Kvemo Mleta and the water flew in the house of local inhabitant. Since then, 18 families have been living in the river-bed. They petitioned to the local and central authority several times and requested their resettlement in safer place. Despite many promises, they still live in the risky zone. Part of population managed to evacuate their children. But, those who could not do it remained in the village together with their children.

Mleta residents are afraid that the landslide will occur due to recent heavy rains. Civil Coalition for Migration Issues appeals to the government to promptly take measures to resettle the people living in the risky zone to a safer place and to create adequate living conditions for them.
