Increase of Meat Prices is Direct Result of EU Requirement - Coalition for European Georgia states

July 4, 2011

Increase of meat prices in Georgia is the direct result of EU requirements, reads the statement of Coalition for European Georgia.
The Coalition notes that it always called on the Georgian government to carefully and flexibly enforce the EU regulations to avoid the increase of expenses of economic activity and rise of prices.

“We will soon catch up with Europe with our prices. It will further worsen state of our citizens. Coalition for European Georgia considers that increasing meat prices is the direct result of fulfilling EU requirements. Any kind of appellation regarding the “monopolist” actors in the new meat market is just an attempt to blind people,” – state the members of Coalition.

“We support deepening relationship with Europe but since European regulations evoke the increase of expenses and it will encourage illegal sector, the government needs to be very careful. Our government is obliged to analyze the possible effect of adopting EU regulations on the state economy. Otherwise, in case of negative effects of adopting EU regulations, as it happened in case of meat prices, European Commission will always avoid the responsibility the way Juan Echanove did it,” – reads the statement.

The coalition welcomes the “honest statement of Vice Premier Giorgi Baramidze which means that Georgian government acknowledges its responsibility.”

The statement was signed by 18 members of coalition, including: Levan Cholokashvili, Vakhtang Megrelishvili, Ketevan Gabiani, Mikheil Tavkhelidze, Zurab Japaridze, Tamar Chergoleishvili, Levam Ramishvili.
Vice Premier Giorgi Baramidze stated a while ago that increase of meat prices is related to the EU requirement according to which only the meat slaughtered in slaughterhouses should reach the market. According to Baramidze, Georgian government aims to regulate the relevant legislation and sphere before signing the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement.

As a response, the member of the delegation of European Commission Juan Echanove disseminated statement according to which the EU has never asked the government to immediately start enforcing the issue that all meat reaching the market should be slaughtered in slaughterhouses.
