Soso Tsintsadze Requests all Details regarding the Case of Photo Reporters to be Disclosed to the Public

July 8, 2011

Political scientist Soso Tsinstadze requests that all details regarding the case of detained photo reporters are disclosed to the public.

According to him, in certain instances, the classification top secret should not be applied in the case and the trial should be maximally open.

“The public should know what the heck the photographers took and what kind of damage it caused to our country. If we want democracy and transparency, it should be this way and it might increase the level of responsibility of journalists before the state and public,” – states Soso Tsinstadze to interpressnews while commenting on the fact of arrest of photo reporters.

According to Soso Tsintsadze, for him, as for the former journalist who supports freedom of press, it is hard to state that Georgian press could not become the fourth government.

The political scientist links the reasons of this to the Shevardnadze’s period when the press was granted maximum freedom without any responsibility.

“President Shevardnadze might have boasted that the press was free during his leadership but the fact that the press is often being irresponsible comes from Shevardnadze’s period,” – considers Tsintsadze.

Besides, according to him, the irresponsible attitude of some journalists tarnishes the reputation of Georgian media.

“The journalists must not be untouchable. A person of any profession can commit crime but before the court makes decision regarding photo reporters, nobody has right to allege that they are criminals before the state except for the prosecution,” – added Soso Tsintsadze.
