Peasants Fined with 250 GEL For Having Irrigated Plots by River Water

July 19, 2011

Peasants in Signagi district were fined with 250 GEL for having irrigated their plots with the water of the Alazani River. The peasants told the Information Center of Kakheti that before being fined, Alazani M, Ltd did not suggest them to sign any agreements on the usage of the river water.

“I had 200 plants of tomato; they were getting dry because of drought and I watered them. They came and fined me with 250 GEL. I cannot afford to pay the fine. Unless I pay it on time, they threatened me with suing in the court. I cannot buy even bread for the family and how can I pay 250 GEL? So much water is wasted, and they fined me for having watered my plot,” said Darejan Javashvili.

Director of the Ltd Alazani M Aleksandre Imerlishvili said they have representatives in every village who have warned peasants about signing contracts with the Ltd several times. “Those, who used the irrigation water without agreements, of course will be fined,” said Imerlishvili.
