IDPs under Intolerable Conditions

July 27, 2011

Gela Mtivlishvili

7 families of IDPs from Abkhazia are living under the intolerable conditions in the village Mukhrani of Mtskheta region. Two weeks ago, the apartment building where the IDPs lived in was burned and they are sheltering in the damaged building of the polyclinic right now.

The water is leaking from the roof in the building. They independently constructed the electricity wires. As for the drinking water, they have to carry it from the well.

“The fire started in our apartment building two weeks ago at 4 am in the morning. The light was off on that day. Thus the electricity wires could not have been the reason of the fire. There was no victim. Only one IDP was injured, 75-year-old Pasha Chkhetiani who jumped out of the second floor out of fear and broke her leg. The fire started so fast that we could not even manage to bring out our belongings. The fire brigade came in two hours after the notification,” – noted IDP Nino Kvaratskhelia.

The IDPs were given “linen crunched by the mouse,” plaids and plastic vessels. “In several days they were given the gas containers for single-use. After single use, the containers did not work,” – states Klara Lashkhia.

Nino Kvaratskhelia states that she sent sms to the Minister Koba Subeliani after the fire and told him about the problems but did not receive answer.

“There is a “Shato Mukhrani” territory near one of the owners of which is Mamuka Khazaradze. He rides his horse here sometimes. The children saw how his horses were treated by one bucket of raisins. The horses live under better conditions than we do,” – states Nino Kvaratskhelia.

Despite numerous attempts, we could not obtain comment from the Ministry of IDPs from the Occupied Territories, Refugees and Accommodation of Georgia.
