The Human Rights Center – Gurjaani Prosecutor’s Office Does not Respond to Domestic Violence

According to the Human Rights Center, 63-year-old resident of a Kakheti regional village becomes victim of violence from her husband and son every day. The family members permanently beat her, injure her body and threaten with death.

The human rights organization has petitioned to the prosecutor’s office about the fact on June 15 but the law enforcement officers have not addressed to the violation yet.

Coordinator of the Human Rights Center’s Kakheti office said there is enough evidence to prove that the husband and son have injured the woman several times and consequently she took medical treatment; though the violators were not punished for it. In addition, the Human Rights Center reported that local police officers do not react on the messages of the victim where she requests protection.

According to the survey of the “National Network of Protection from Violence”the highest rating of domestic violence was observed in Kakheti region. 92% of the interviewed people suffer from violence in their families; 86% is victim of physical assault; 67% permanently fears of attack from a family member. 64% of the victims were raped by their husbands; 29% was under physical or sexual oppression from the spouse during pregnancy.
