Public Defender’s Office together with the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association carried out scheduled monitoring in the penitentiary settings of the West Georgia.
“In some establishments, a doctor’s service and provision with medicines are still problematic; in several establishments there are still no TV sets; there are practically no resocialization programs for convicts in the entire penitentiary system, and they are not prepared properly for release.
The living conditions of prisoners placed in closed establishments still remains problematic. Their condition is further aggravated in summer when the conditions in the cells become particularly unbearable. The condition is partly made more tolerable by ventilators, which can be bought in the shops of the establishments, though, due to the absence of work-related, educational and other events in the penitentiary system, the prisoners in closed establishment have to spend at least 23 hours a day in cells, which makes their condition even graver,” the statement of the Public Defender’s Office.
The Ombudsman’s office added the detailed analyze of the situation will be published in the Public Defender’s Report.
