Homosexual Tourists Beaten in Tusheti

September 6, 2011

Homosexual tourists were beaten in mountainous Tusheti region of Georgia; abusers tied their legs and hands and threw them in the river. Representative of a tourist company informed the Information Center of Kakheti about it. He said the tourists have already left Georgia.

The incident occurred a week ago in Omalo village. Several Georgian young people, being on holiday in Tusheti, took three German tourists to a local party. According to the ICK, the quarrel started after the foreign tourists kissed each other at table. The young Georgian people initially beat them, then tied up their hands and legs and threw them in the river. Luckily, the residents of Omalo village took them out of the river. Person from the tourist company said the locals ensured their safe trip to Tbilisi and German tourists have already left Georgia.

The tourists did not apply to police or a consulate regarding the incident. Consequently, the Akhmeta district police have not started investigation on the fact.

Akhmeta district deputy governor Vazha Naskidashvili told the ICK that police officers regularly patrol in Omalo village. “Particularly in summer when there are a lot of tourists in Tusheti, police officers are always there. They even have a watch house there across the airport. But we do not have any information about beating the tourists,” said the deputy governor.

According to the ICK, the Georgian young people, who beat the tourists, are sons of high-ranking governmental officials. The ICK tries to identify their personalities.
