Experts not Excluding Increase of International Organizations’ Events in Abkhazia

September 13, 2011

Irina Ardashelia, Information Agency Pirveli

Abkhazia whose independence was acknowledged only by Russia and several countries of its direct influence is preparing for domino world championship.

Though Georgian government calls on international community to condemn such acts, the President of International Domino Federation Lucas Guittard visited Sokhumi and met with the de-facto President Alexander Ankvab to arrange the works for VIII world domino championship.

It is against Georgian legislation to incorporate non-acknowledged Republic in International Domino Federation. But it still has happened. How possible is it to continue this tendency and what shall we expect from the world in future?

As the deputy Foreign Minister Davit Jalaghania stated to Pirveli, the relevant Georgian body already addressed the International Domino Federation to refrain from participating in the event planned in the occupied territory.

“I do not know who will participate in this championship but it is illegal act for us and if the participants enter Abkhazian territory bypassing Georgia’s legal border, they will violate Georgian law,” – stated Jalaghania.

Expert Mamuka Areshidze assumes that the tendency of joining international organizations might continue in future.

“I had information that International Domino Organization took this step even before Russia-Georgia war. I was interested and found out that the head of European Domino Federation by whose input Abkhazia joined International Domino Federation is from St. Petersburg by origin. This makes it clear that Russia is involved here. Abkhazian sportsmen have participated in international championships under the name of other countries before, but this kind of decision is unique. I think this tendency might continue and other organizations might as well take steps towards Abkhazia,” – stated Areshidze to Pirveli.

According to him, Russia has tried to incorporate Abkhazia in different international structures in the past.

“The same happened in connection with world chamber of commerce which Taiwan and Northern Cyprus joined in the past. In this case it was not possible to incorporate Abkhazia since US and Mexican delegations opposed it. But the fact is that Russia takes these steps permanently. Thus, we should be very careful in regards with these kinds of actions and should reconsider our policy towards Abkhazia. More we isolate Abkhazia and block it more Abkhazians will incline towards Russia. We should try to encourage Abkhazia to take these steps not through Russia, but through us,” – noted Areshidze.

According to the expert Irakli Tskitishvili: “Despite the fact that more and more countries refuse to take part in this championship, the fact that an international organization connects with marionette regime is dangerous.”

“The countries ideologically more close with Russia are participating in this championship. However, it would be sad if the countries like Spain and Armenia participate. As I know, the issue of Armenia’s participation has not been decided yet,” – noted Tskitishvili.

Conflict scientist Paata Zakareishvili shares Mamuka Areshidze’s assumption that the number of similar facts will increase in future.

“Despite the fact that it contradicts with Georgia’s legislation, International Domino Federation is not interested in it. The similar events take place in other non-acknowledged Republics and if this facts irritates us, we should either try to solve the situation on time or put up with the statements and just protest it,” – stated Zakareishvili.
