September 21, 2011

Mariam Imerlishvili

September 21is International Day of Peace. “International Day of Peace shall be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples… it would be appropriate to devote a specific time to concentrate the efforts of the United Nations and its Member States, as well as of the whole of mankind, to promoting the ideals of peace and to giving positive evidence of their commitment to peace in all viable ways,” the UN Resolution adopted in 1981 states.

The day was first celebrated in 1982; on September 21, 2002 it was officially declared International Day of peace. Every year millions of people celebrate Peace Day throughout the world; they organize symbolic events – let say simple gathering of friends, concerts and forums where hundreds thousands of people participate.

The Human Rights House Tbilisi also memorized the day in Tbilisi. On September 21, peace demonstration was organized on Rustaveli Avenue (in front of the Rustaveli Statue).
The participants symbolically released 21 balloons in the sky with peace massages in Abkhaz and Ossetian languages. Representatives of non-governmental and media organizations, and students participated in the peace action.

“The Human Rights House and its member organizations celebrate the September 21 by releasing symbolic balloons and messages in the sky. We want to launch and enhance real peace process between Georgian, Ossetian and Abkhaz nations,” said Nino Gvedashvili, coordinator of the HRHT.

“I hope Abkhaz and Ossetian people will correctly and heartily accept our messages. I believe our love to each other still exists in our hearts. We had been friends during many centuries and old relations shall be restored and maintained. We have nothing to war about,” said Nino Tlashadze from the Human Rights Center, one of the member organizations of the Human Rights House Tbilisi.

Round tables, screening of documentary films on peacebuilding topics are planned in the framework of the Peace Weak of the HRHT which will end on September 23.
